FFwD: Mustard Batons
April 22, 2011 in breads

Another Friday, another French Fridays with Dorie post!
This week’s recipe was the ever-so-simple Mustard Batons. I have a deep love for mustard so I was pretty stoked about this one. It’s basically puff pastry spread with mustard and then baked. Yeah.
They turned out really good! I do think the recipe needs more mustard though and next time I would probably used a really spicy mustard instead of the regular dijon. The puff pastry, which I wouldn’t ever pair with mustard on my own, was flaky and buttery and really cut down on the tang of the mustard. The poppy seeds were unnecessary but made for pretty batons, huh?
If you’re interested in the recipe, make sure you check out Dorie’s book Around My French Table. And visit the French Fridays with Dorie page to see how the other members did with this recipe!

Gorgeous photos! A mustard lovers dream appetizer :)
I agree, a little more kick in the mustard!
Yum….what a neat little treat.
Nice photos. I know that I mixed a regular dijon with a stronger grainy one and liked the extra kick.
Your batons look really pretty! Even with the seeds! =D
I’m a mustard lover too;-) I think the sprinkle of poppy seeds make the batons look great. I made mustard and tapenade, the mustard batons were my favorite but my husband preferred the tapenade. I would like to experiment with different mustards and filling next time I make these delicious batons;-)
I saw ‘mustard’ while flipping through my reader and went… wait … what??? Back up. Mmm love mustard – sometimes to the extreme.
My hubby hates mustard so I need to make these sometime when he isn’t around for dinner! Yum!
I am a huge fan of the simple recipes … especially the delicious ones!
Okay this is awesome! I am not evenkidding you that my son LOVES mustard – he’s the only 4 year old I know who dips french fries in mustard! LOL He would surely be extra-nice for 20 minutes if I made this for him!!!
I think the seeds make these special looking. Yours look pretty nestled in that lacy napkin. Nice batons!
Nana and I are big mustard fans too – so we were looking forward to this one. Not to mention that we are big fans of anything “easy” as well :) The only thing I failed to do this time is that I made mine in the morning, so couldn’t swing a drink along side it. Poor planning on my part and all the more reason to revisit this one soon. Great post !
Great photos – your batons look professionally made!
I agree – these were good, and something I would never have tried in a million years on my own.
I love mustard too. Since I was making these for my boys, I did not use dijon mustard but used a spicy brown mustard. Next time I will put more mustard in it. There will definitely be a next time. Your pictures are great and make me want to make another batch. Great post.
Your batons look so light and puffy. So pretty!
Oh your batons look really good… love the photos!
These really were wonderful! But I agree…they need a bit more spice! Grey Poupon didn’t produce that extra kick that these could’ve used. :)
I love that you wrapped your batons in a napkin – they look like they might have been served at a restaurant.
Nice photos for your perfect batons…nice to have a quick yet tasty recipe this week.
Ooo, these look awesome for dipping!! I love mustard too! And yes, the poppy seeds make them very purty, hee :)
Your blog & photos are beautiful! Your batons look lovely with the poppy seeds. I used regular Dijon, too, and am with you on using a stronger mustard next time. The batons would be even better, for sure.
Love how your batons turned out, Amanda :)
Amanda, your batons are beautiful and you can come visit my mustard pantry whenever you like!!
