Secret Recipe Club – No Bake Cookies
November 14, 2011 in Uncategorized
Many, many moons ago, a friend of mine was dating this girl. We didn’t really have much in common so I turned to my old standby conversation: food. Because who doesn’t like to eat? Right?!
So I asked her what she liked to cook. She said no-bake cookies.
It was a total WUT moment for me because a) I’d never heard of no-bake cookies and b) She liked to cook cookies that didn’t even require an oven?!
And that’s when I swore off no-bake cookies forever. I had never tried them, never seen them, didn’t even know what was in them. But I was sure I wouldn’t like them. Because you don’t. even. cook. them.
Well when I got assigned to For Such a Time as This for this month’s Secret Recipe Club post, I started browsing through Jennifer’s archives and stopped on her no-bake cookie recipe.
Chocolate. Peanut butter. Oats. LOTS of butter.
What’s not to love there?! So I made them. And they rocked my world. Seriously. They’re like dense little nuggets of awesome.
The best part? They took approximately 3 1/2 minutes to throw together and were ready to eat after sitting for about 20! In. Sane.
(PS. I’ve made them 3 times since I originally tried the recipe.)

- 2 cups sugar
- 4 tablespoons Cocoa
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups quick oats
- Mix together the milk, sugar, and cocoa in a sauce pan until blended. Add the stick of butter and stir over medium heat until butter is melted, stirring often to keep from burning. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Remove from burner and stir in the peanut butter and vanilla.
- Stir well then add in 3 cups of quick oats. Stir for 1-2 minutes until no longer glossy. Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper. Let sit for about an hour before removing and enjoying!

You had never heard of no-bake cookies? These were my brother’s favorite cookie of all time, probably BECAUSE they required no baking! Of course, ours were not nearly as pretty as you shaped yours like, but they were always a favorite of any kid I’ve ever seen.
I love no bake cookies. Perfect in the summertime!!
No bake cookies are a favorite of mine!!
I hate it when I decide not to do something on principle and then find out I had been missing out on so much! These do look fantastic. Peanut butter and chocolate together in a cookie would make my family very happy. Not having to cook them would put me over-the-top overjoyed! Good choice.
That is funny! I always go to food too. I figure even if there is nothing else, they have to like food right? I haven’t made a no bake cookie in a long time but they sounds pretty freaking good. Great SRC pick!
Looks great! These are one of my favorite cookies that my mom makes. So fun to be in SRC with you!
I was like you, I didn’t get what the big deal with no-bake cookies was until I caved in and made some. And after that we became BFF! Food is a great ice-breaker, especially one containing peanut butter, chocolate and lots of butter like these cookies!
I didn’t grow up knowing what these were either, but a friend introduced them to my children, who loved them, so I quickly received requests to make them. They’re great for after school snacks and lunchboxes.

No bake cookies are a childhood favorite of mine. My Grandmother always made them. I think I need to whip these up for my kiddos someday soon!
Love these cookies! My mom always made a similar recipe to this that didn’thave peanut butter. Looking forward to trying these out this week!
I can’t believe that you had never had no-bake cookies?!!? Whaaaaaaaat? I mean I think this was the first cookie I was allowed to “bake” as a child. The reward is a very tasty munchable cookie. These things are SO addictive though. I have to make them and get them out of the house. For reals!
I love no bake treats!
HAHA! I love your story. I like no bake cookies every once in a while too….they have a totally different texture than regular cookies!

I’ve never tried no bake cookies before, but I think I’m sold! I wonder if I could use almond butter instead of peanut (I’m allergic – boo!). I’ll have to try my hand at some no bake cookies soon!
I think almond butter would be even better! Have you tried Barney Butter? I love baking with that stuff! SO GOOD.
Thanks for reading and commenting! :)
Like you, I never was interested in no-bake cookies, but yours have changed my mind! What’s not to like with all those delicious flavors. Will have to make these for the grandkids at Thanksgiving! Also, just saw your apple cinnamon rolls on Melissa’s blog-Wow!

Oh my – No-/bake Cookies!! This is a throwback for me – try keeping them in the freezer – it adds a whole other dimension! They don’t really get so frozen you can’t eat them right away. I don’t like them any other way!!
Love no bakes and these bring back some great memories! I agree, if you can keep them around long enough, having them right out of the freezer is quite yummy!
A favorite of all times, easy fast always appreciated andi thewednesdaybaker
