Doughnuts or donuts?
I have to tell you that I hate donut.
Like, it actually hurts me when I go to my fave doughnut place in Colorado Springs and have to tag it with “donut” on Instagram.
So if I’ve ever pinned your donuts and changed the name to doughnuts, that’s why.
Clearly, I’ve had doughnuts on the brain. I’ve already talked my husband into a cheat day Saturday so we can get doughnuts in the morning but yesterday, I couldn’t stop thinking about them.
I even got a Strawberry Starburst slushie to try to kill the craving but nope, doughnuts had to happen.
So I made these delicious yeast doughnuts with a maple glaze! Because what’s better than that?
And I know you’re all “Ugggghhhh, I don’t want to fry doughnuts!” because that’s my exact reaction whenever I see a doughnut recipe I want to make. But these weren’t that bad. I fried in 3 batches and was done in, like, 10 minutes.
They are so worth fussing around with a pot of oil for 10 minutes.

- 6 cups peanut oil
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Add sour cream and egg to yeast mixture; stir until smooth. Combine flour and salt. Add flour mixture to yeast; beat until a sticky mixture forms. Switch to a dough hook and knead until smooth and elastic, about 3 minutes.
-
Place dough in a clean bowl coated with cooking spray. Cover dough with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place, 1 hour or until almost doubled in size.
-
Punch dough down. Divide dough into 24 equal portions; roll each portion into a ball. Cover dough with plastic wrap coated with cooking spray; let stand 30 minutes.
-
Clip a candy/fry thermometer onto the side of a Dutch oven; add oil to pan. Heat oil to 375F.
-
While you wait for the oil to come to temperature, whisk powdered sugar, syrup, and water until no lumps remain.
-
Place 8 dough balls in hot oil; fry 2 minutes or until golden and done, turning as necessary. Make sure the oil temperature remains at 375F. Remove doughnut holes from pan; drain. Dip doughnut holes into syrup mixture; remove with a slotted spoon. Drain on a cooling rack over a baking sheet. Repeat procedure 3 times with remaining dough balls and syrup mixture.

I’m guilty.. all of my doughnut recipes are called donuts :( Can we still be friends?
You are right, frying doughnuts is kind of a pain, but totally worth it. Especially for the flavors going on here, maple and sour cream sound amazing. And I love how you just made doughnut holes- they are the best part!
I’m not so picky about how they’re spelled, I just want to eat all of them. These look amazingggggggg!!!!
These look perfect!
I haven’t made donuts in forever! They look perfect!
Pinned, of course. :-)
I agree. 1. I hate frying anything – it’s really not true that every Southerner loves fried food. bleck! and 2. I hate ‘donuts’ the word not the food, even though I use it in my posts. Mr Google said he likes it better. wth? REAL spellings aren’t higher in SEO than slang?
My boys want holes, every time we buy doughnuts I try to get doughnuts because they’re cheaper the boys are like ‘no, mommie, I want the holes, they’re wayyyyyyy better.’
dunkin’ DONUTS. ha!
and you are making my mouth drool.
seriously, I have been craving doughnuts for the last two days, and YES – NO dounut
I found the cutest doughnut arrow-skewer idea for valentines day and now I have the recipe to go with it!
I don’t care how you spell it, I just want them alllllllll :)
These look so wonderful and sound heavenly. I love that they are made from scratch too…it is hard to find a homemade donut recipe these days – unless it’s a baked! I’m the same way when I see a fried donut recipe, but sometimes it is nice to treat yourself to a good old fashioned donut. Pinned for later. xo, Catherine
Doughnut holes are the best! I love them because I can eat 6 and it’s really only like eating one regular sized one, right? ;-)
I always grew up spelling it donut so when I see people spell it “doughnut” I always thinking to myself “Oh they fancy….” I love the look of these babies and would probably end up making a few batched and eating them all by myself. I’m so bad.
Oh no!! You’re going to make me deep fry in my kitchen! These DOUGHNUT holes look awesome Amanda!!
So I have to agree with you. Why are there two spellings? It bugs me. But these doughnuts look delicious! I need to make these for my daughter. She is obsessed with them. Pinned!
YES to doughnuts! I’m one of those people who hates when traditional spellings get simplified because people are lazy…. like cheque/check! Anyway. Rant over. These doughnuts would be worth the extra effort of frying them — there’s nothing better than fresh doughnuts! Pinned :)
I have to force myself to spell it as doughnut, and thanks to blogging I THINK I have outgrown my donut habit. Growing up in New England the birth place of Dunkins… Donut is the way… I’m rebellious with my doughnut now.
These doughnut holes look amazing. The problem I have is I think, I only ate one and it’s just one teeny tiny doughnut hole….
Your pictures look so delicious! Will have to try out your recipe!
I wish I had a couple to go with my coffee right now!
I say donut. Don’t throw things!! More importantly, I want like 1,057 of these.
These look wonderful! And I love that you spelled them doughnut too!
I must say, I almost do a happy dance when I see someone actually FRY doughnuts. To me, the baked variety are simply muffins with a hole. I have a couple of older posts on my blog that need to be rephotographed, but I have been putting it off. Doughnuts are actually easy to make, but I psych myself out of it over and over. Your little doughnut holes look perfect!
To me a doughnut has to be fried. I love my doughnut pan, but it really just feels like a muffin shaped like a doughnut. These look amazing!
