In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, stir together water, yeast, and maple syrup. Let sit about 5 minutes, until bubbly. Beat in bread flour and salt until combined. Switch to dough hook and knead until the dough becomes elastic, about 8 minutes.

Transfer to dough to a large mixing bowl sprayed with oil and turn to coat. Cover and let rise until doubled, about an hour.

Turn onto a floured surface and shape into a ball, pinching the bottom together to seal. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350F. Once the dough has doubled, slash the top as desired, and bake until browned, about 35 minutes.

Cool on wire rack completely before slicing and serving.
